PARTICIPANTS
The London Teacher Training College Diploma in TESOL is a comprehensive teaching qualification for teaching English as a second or foreign language and for those already teaching who wish to upgrade their knowledge and skills. We and our partner school in Singapore have trained participants with a wide spread of nationalities, from America, Australia, Britain, Singapore, Canada, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Ireland, Italy, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, the Philippines, Tunisia, Russia, Mongolia, Turkey, Uruguay and Vietnam.

These participants have gained this Diploma in TESOL and gone on into teaching in Britain, Australia, Singapore, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Cambodia, Laos, Canada, East Africa, Russia, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar and Indonesia. They are working in language schools, government schools, international schools, tuition centres, business schools, management training, bank training, developing country relief and development work, community programmes and some are starting their own education projects.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
1. Ideally a Bachelor Degree in any discipline but if you do not possess this, at least 5 passes at GCE O Level to include a pass in English;
OR equivalents in your own country;
OR other qualifications in English
(for example, IELTS Band 6.5 / TOEFL 600).

London Teacher Training College has an inclusive approach, not wanting to bar those who have a passion to teach but who did not progress academically beyond school-leaving qualifications. At the same time, we have worked with trainees  holding Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor Degrees, Masters Degrees and PhDs in various disciplines; all have wanted to develop their ability to teach English as a second language, to understand and deal with the issues language learning.

COURSE AIMS
1.   To be familiar with the history of English and its teaching.
2.   To develop language awareness in English grammar.
3.   To become familiar with the phonetics and phonology of spoken English.
4.   To understand how language is learned and acquired.
5.   To understand what constitutes error in English language learning.
6.   To know the methodologies available for the teaching of language.
7.   To be able to use methodologies and the teaching principles to achieve them.
8.   To be able to create original lesson plans.
9.   To know the use of teaching aids and support materials for teaching English.
10. To be effective in class management and organisation.


COURSE STRUCTURE AND DELIVERY

There are four modules, each with two sections. Course notes and handouts will be sent to you online, in order from Module 1, Module 2, Module 3 and Module 4 as you progress through the course.

Please look at the sample of our online course notes, Module 3 Section A and we hope you will agree that they provide an interesting and informative learning experience.

You will also access video recordings of teachers delivering lessons and you will be able to combine the theory of the approaches, methodologies and principles of language teaching learnt on the course with what you see in these videos. The videos are extremely useful and give you an appreciation of classroom management issues. Compiling a set of observations on the video recordings to a satisfactory standard will lead to a Certificate in Teaching Observation from THE TESOL COLLEGE as an addition to your Diploma in TESOL. There is no additional fee for this Certificate.

Study in your own time and at your own pace. Allow 45 hours on each module to meet the course specification of 180 hours. The course can be completed in about 8 weeks if your study time is almost continuous. Maximum completion time is 12 months from enrolment. Completed observations for the accompanying Certificate in Teaching Observation must be submitted within 6 months of your last assignment submission for the Diploma.

MODULE 1: LANGUAGE THEORY
Needs of learners.
Nature of language and varieties - historical, geographical and social.
Appropriateness of English language.
Language acquisition by young learners.
Methodologies and principles of language teaching.

MODULE 2: LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The application of approaches, methodologies, principles and techniques. Uses of a range of teaching materials and teaching aids are covered.
Applying methods for effective learning - teaching the four skills.
Questioning in class.
Teaching materials and aids - rhyme and song, pictures, flashcards and wordcards, role play, drama, games and puzzles, real objects, effective use of the whiteboard and electronic teaching aids.

MODULE 3: CLASSROOM PLANNING AND ORGANISATION
Course aims and syllabus.
Schemes of work and timetabling activities.
Lesson planning - aims, assumptions, materials,activities, interactions, timing, anticipating problems and developing solutions, writing the lesson plan.
Evaluating textbooks.
Types of classroom interaction.
Classroom management and classroom layout.

MODULE 4: LINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE TEACHING
Phonetic, phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary English.
Phonetics - production of individual sounds.
Phonology - phonological features in words and in longer elements of speech.
Morphology of words.
Vocabulary and semantics.
Grammar, structures and error.


ASSESSMENT AND GRADING
Assessment is by written assignments, two for each of the four modules. You will receive detailed and timely feedback on each assignment from your tutor.

GRADE A, PASS WITH DISTINCTION
The trainee teacher has demonstrated considerable further reading, an ability to express original thinking and has proved to have a sound knowledge of TESOL techniques. The trainee teacher has also indicated an attitude and ability to be able to soundly develop these techniques in teaching.

GRADE B, PASS WITH CREDIT
The trainee teacher has read more widely than the course requires and is able to relate the theoretical issues studied to teaching.

GRADE C, PASS
The trainee teacher has passed the course satisfactorily, has reached an adequate standard in each of the modules and has shown assimiation of the basic elements of TESOL.

You will receive excellent and informative course notes and handouts to give you much more out of your Diploma. These have been developed specifically by us for online study to gain this Diploma, with comprehensive linkages to authoritative sources and to our own video resources.


COURSE FEE

This is the same as the course fee for taking the Diploma directly from London Teacher Training College, British Pounds (GBP)355 and GST/VAT does not apply.

The course fee includes full course notes, high quality handouts, distance tutoring, assignment feedback and recommending of module grades to LTTC, TQUK Level 7 Diploma registration, your Diploma scroll and transcript from London Teacher Training College, dispatch of these to your address, and all administration costs. If you take the included TESOL COLLEGE Certificate in Teaching Observation short course, there is no additional fee for this.

On receiving payment, we issue a receipt, then scan and email this to you. An invoice can be issued if requested.

From when your course fee payment is received by us there is a 14-day cooling-off period in which you are eligible to receive a FULL 100% refund of your payment.

1.   You have a right* to cancel your application by email for 14 days from us receiving your fee payment whereupon 100% of any course fees paid will be refunded. This is a 'cooling down' period.

        into effect on 13 June 2014, implementing the Consumer Rights Directive in UK law. The
        regulations apply to items bought online, at a distance, or away from a trader's premises (for
        example, at home or at work).
 

2.   We refund 100% of your course fees if London Teacher Training College has not received all your assignments from us with our recommendations for module grades within 30 days of receipt of the last assignment from you.


TUTORS

DR ALAN RICHARDSON
Alan obtained his Bachelor Degree and PhD at the University of Bradford, UK. He became a registered teacher in the state school system and subsequently worked in education and research (Senior Research Fellow, University of Leeds and. In 1993, he moved from the UK to be a senior lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic. He obtained a Certificate in Teaching (University of Sheffield, UK in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic). Since 1998, he has worked at institutions such as MDIS as Academic Director and has taught English at the National University of Singapore (Extension), APMI KAPLAN and other schools. He has been teacher training with the London Teacher Training College Diploma in TESOL from Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and the UK since 2005. He created British Education Centre to specialise in teacher training in 2007 and has developed THE TESOL COLLEGE in Scotland to provide quality global TESOL training in the e-learning environment.

MRS EVE HIRST
Eve obtained her BA (Hons) in English at the University of Durham, UK and then worked in training, developing English skills within the EDI and City & Guilds examination systems. Moving from the UK to Singapore in 2011, Eve then taught IGCSE and A Level, preparing students for Edexcel English language examinations as well as English for Academic Study. At the same time, Eve studied for her Diploma in TESOL. She also developed her interest in English with drama while working with 12 to 20 year-old students. Eve returned to the UK in 2013 and taught English in Sheffield at training institutions, building on her experience with cultural diversity. She worked in government schools, augmenting her experience in the private sector. Eve now works in Vancouver, Canada at an international college, teaching particularly upper intermediate ESOL and helping students with IELTS preparation.
